Links - Resources and Companies

There are several categories of resources here.

Birmingham, Alabama companies Birmingham has a strong business community and there are many great companies based here.  I have had the privilege of working for and with many of these companies and hold each of them in high regard.

  • AirMed InternationalThe premier world-wide medical rescue company. With its own fleet of fixed wing aircraft, AirMed offers unparalleled service. Whether it is fee-for-service transport or an affordable membership program that provides great peace of mind.  Transportation can be arranged for world-wide returns home, specialty transport to a domestic hospital, or return of mortal remains.  I proudly serve as Director of IT for AirMed.
  • eXspend An expense management solution offered as SaaS.  This company offers great expense management solutions accessible to the smaller organization but robust enough for the large enterprise.  All at an affordable price.  eXspend's leadership team includes quiet giants in the Birmingham IT community who have consider it a privilege serving.
  • Brasfield & Gorrie A large construction company committed to excellence.  While I was serving as development manager I was mentored by a talented IT Director and CIO, both of whom instilled a solid foundation in IT project management.  They took the best of construction basics and blended it with MSF, SDLC and old fashion communication and documentation.

Professional Organizations and Non-profits There are great opportunities worldwide as well as right here in Birmingham for professionals.

  • PMI - Project Management Institute. Offers project standards and certifications for organizations needing to improve and increase efficiencies. With a deplorable failure rate for projects across nearly all industries, PMI searches for ways to address these with improved standards and certifications for practitioners. Membership offers access to communities of practice in a wide range of interests. I have been a member off and on since 2004 and PMP certified since 2004. !! PMP certification is no "magic bullet" guaranteeing success. It is only the beginning and success is still only through discipline and focus.
  • PMI - Birmingham Chapter. Birmingham has a strong PMI chapter with community involvement.  Monthly meetings feature a wide range of speakers including "Birmingham celebrities" as well as speakers from across the southeast.  I have also found they offer opportunities for community involvement through the local colleges and technical community.
  • Tech Birmingham is a Birmingham area group that offers networking and even training opportunities.  It also provides entrepreneur summits for startups.  Tech Birmingham works with area vendors as sponsors as well as local volunteers to support much of their work. I have volunteered for the Tech University (through the Birmingham PMI chapter) which were day long training sessions offered free to area IT workers.
